The Saltee Islands lie about 5 miles off the south coast of Wexford and are uninhabited. Great Saltee measures over one mile in length and is the most important bird sanctuary in Ireland. The on-duty operator enjoyed the sight of sunbathing gray seals by day and mumbling rabbits at night. 2800 QSOs were made and at least as many cans of Guinness were downed. Operators: HB9ASZ Bernie, HB9BFA Rene, HB9DEN Bruno, HB9DKO Karl and me.

The Blasket Islands 52N10.5W. This group of islands, the most westerly off the Irish coast, comprises 7 sizeable islands and isolated rocks, spread in a line west by south over 2 1/2 miles of the Atlantic. The largest, Great Blasket, lies two miles off shore. A small cove, accessible only through a small channel in the rocks, provides the sole landing possibility on Great Blasket which, depending on wind and seas, can be very treacherous. From there a 1/4 mile hike over a steep overgrown cliff path led to our operating site at the ruined island village. Great Blasket is populated with sheep, donkeys, rabbits and seals. Operating and enjoying the poor propagation and the beautiful scenery were: Tony EI2GX, Tony EI3HA, Mark EI2HL, Declan EI6FR, Liam EI7DSB, Emmet EI7HF, Alan EI9IF, Dermot EI2FTB, Tony GW4VEQ, Robert GI0KOW, Bernie HB9ASZ, Karl HB9DKO, Rolf HB9DGV and Chris HB9AUZ. More than 5000 QSO's were made on 160-2 meters.
